I have been rather quiet lately because it’s summer, my kids are home, and there’s simply no time to write. I console myself with the idea that I am lying on the beach (who can complain about that?), watching people from under the brim of my hat, and taking mental notes for future characters.
My brain is baked and my thoughts aren’t nearly as deep as the shallow river running over my feet. This is the best I can do:
Bathing suits leave little to the imagination. What if they made a custom bathing suit to match the color of your skin? The top could have nipples, the bottom could have a little smiley face or a fig leaf or something.
Bodies are interesting. You can tell a lot about a personality by the way the body moves over hot sand.
My girls are growing up.

Be thankful you are having summer Anna 😉
I am! Is it cold over there? (I have not even watched the games. Shame on me!)
Anna,
I don’t mean to be TOO rhapsodic, but, really, you’re great.
Write your fucking memoir.
Love, Jody
Ha! Yaaay! (Memoir? I’ve never even considered that before….) Welcome back from your vacation!
What a great post. I agree - people watching at the shore is a study into the human condition 🙂 Loved this… May the rest of your summer be joyful ~ Robyn
You too, Robyn. Crazy what one can see on the surface, right? Happy summer to you!
You’ve reminded me that I need to get out and people watch more. Maybe not the beach, but definitely out somewhere.
It’s better than television, for sure. I’m imagining the interiors of handbags and medicine cabinets. I’m concocting motives.
Enjoy your beach time with the children!
Do you carry a note book with you? Just in case…
Of course I bring it with me at all times because you never know when the big idea is going to appear!
Do you carry your camera, Karen?
Almost always!
You can tell about a personality from the way a person walks across the sand? Really. I need to spend more time on the beach. I think when I’m on the beach I’m too phobic about my own inferior presentation to properly observe others.
All this making-up-stories-in-one’s-head is a wonderful distraction. And the hat helps!
That’s another thing. I need me a hat! 😉
As a male at a … delicate age, I must say that I find that image, as well as the others on the other website, unpornographic, which is good. All’s well.
But I just wonder Anna, are the kids allowed on this website? Is it proper for them?! I remember a recent post of yours when you’ve mentioned something about masturbating with I-don-know-what tool! It might have even been a poem. Peculiar.
The crows have all flown away, and this blog is becoming properly improper, decently indecent. I wonder, could this blog become a perfect mirror of its author? Or is it so already? I will remain a mystery…
We’re all grown ups here, VM. But if you came to judge, censor, shake your finger, threaten, or flirt, I invite you to take it elsewhere.
you very funny girl, just keep going
Is that you signed in as me again, mom?
yeah, don’t know how that happens
I was wondering where you were.
All the blogs go so quiet over summer. Cold, wet days must be the good days to blog, sunny ones I suppose you just want a ice cream and a nice ginger beer.
I agree with you about swimsuits. I favour the more demure ones.
How can it be cold and wet in August? I just don’t understand!
Anna, you are brilliant and continue to inspire. Your line, by the way, “if you came to judge, censor, shake your finger, threaten, or flirt, I invite you to take it elsewhere” is brilliant and can be used in other situations. I really like it. Thank you for that, and for being you! Enjoy your summer! Love & bisous from Provence
Aia! One good thing about writing instead of talking: people like me can sound much articulate. John and I have a joke- when getting ready for a party or social gathering, he asks me if I have written a list of conversation ideas on my hand. I hope you are enjoying your days as well, Aia- I suspect you are, thoroughly! xoox
“I have been rather quiet lately because it’s summer, my kids are home, and there’s simply no time to write.”
Me too Anna. And, we have Olympic Fever over here! (makes up for the lack of sun)
Anna, you are most modest, funny (Stephen & I ask each other the same thing before social gatherings), and still BRILLIANT & courageous in your art & writing. Love & bisous toujours
Hey, writers need to rest and refresh, too, even if writing is a central part of your identity. 🙂 And observing counts as writing anyway. Enjoy the beach!
I was at the beach last week and was watching a mother and father encouraging their children to join them in the shallow water. The tiny girl was slightly willing, but her older brother was having none of it.
People-watching at the beach is always good - but I think I’ll always prefer bird-watching. For one, I won’t feel so funny taking their pictures on the sly.
